The line current (IL), kilovolt ampere (kVA) input, and
kilowatt (kW) input of any motor can be calculated if the line voltage (EL), motor efficiency (eff), motor power
factor (pf), and horsepower (hp) output are known.
1. For three-phase motors, the relations are:
IL = [746 (hp)]/[1.73(EL )(pf)(eff)]
kVA input = [1.73 (IL ) (EL )]/1000
2. For single-phase motors, the relations are:
IL = [746 (hp)]/[(EL )(pf)(eff)]
kVA input = [(IL )(EL )]/1000
kW input = kVA x pf
